SMITHFIELD’S rising rugby league star Benjamin Whitehouse is a champion try-scorer.
The 14-year-old, who is a triplet, has scored more than 20 tries since he began playing in 2007.
But playing hooker helped his statistics, he said. “I love playing that position because I always get the ball and it helps me score heaps of tries,” he said.
The Westfields Sports High School student, one of this week’s Fairfield Advance Junior Sports Star Award nominees, played for the Canley Heights Dragons under-12 division one team in 2007 and the under-13 division one team in 2008.
He is now playing for the Canley Vale Kookas under-14 division one team.
He said in the three years he’s been playing rugby league he has received about five medals for his achievements on the field.
“When I was playing for the Dragons I received four medals including the player of the match award and the most improved player award,” he said.
The die-hard Wests Tigers supporter said he enjoyed playing rugby league because it kept him fit.
Like his brother Matthew, who featured as a Junior Sports Star Award nominee last week, he is hoping to be selected for the Harold Matthews Cup at the end of the year.
“If I get selected it can take me places,” he said.
