In the First Test the Australian Team needed a little time to put it all together against a very large and physical Kiwi side who had won their opening tour match 50 - 24 against South East Queensland.
A New Zealand try virtually from the kick off in the second half put them ahead but from then on it was all Australia. The forwards laid the platform with Pearce Kelly and Brian Dangerfield outstanding with hooker Brett Finn scoring 2 tries. Captain and lock Kai Holland was injured with a broken knee cap early in the game and took no further part in the series.
The backs demonstrated both speed and skill to make the most of the opportunities presented. Great dummy half running from pace men, wingers Joven Clarke and Manu Asoava and good direction and great kicking from 5/8 Brad Davis were keys to Australia's success.
The Australians went into the second test with a game plan to physically dominate the Kiwis, play out their rehearsed sets, continue to gain yardage from dummy half and improve their one on one defence against their big opposition. It all worked according to plan with a record 52-18 scoreline.
Highlights of the match were a brilliant 80m individual try by the flying Joven Clarke two tries a piece to Alan Brookman, Steve Irwin and Anthony Quinn, tough forward play by the pack as a whole with a particularly courageous performance by Andrew Price and some outstanding running play by the backline.
The two matches were highly successful. The players applied themselves through a concentrated training period in unseasonal heat and the way they melded into a highly formidable outfit was a credit to all concerned.
